The emptiest state

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the lowest population density in all of Germany. That means forests, lakes, miles of coastline and villages where genuinely nothing happens. If you want to get right out of your own life for a while, there’s no better region in the country.

From Amsterdam, Rostock is about six hours by car. That’s a journey, so we make a stay of it: two days, or a long weekend.

What this state is

The only real city is Rostock, on the Warnow, with a working harbour and a university that dates back to 1419. There’s more about it on the city page below.

What else this state has to offer lies outside that city. Schwerin with its castle on an island in the lake. Stralsund and Greifswald, both brick and Hanseatic. The islands of Rügen and Usedom, the first with the chalk cliffs Caspar David Friedrich painted, the second with imperial baths from a time when half of Berlin spent the summer here.

And the inland, which people skip as a matter of course: the Müritz area, thousands of lakes strung together, where you can spend a day in a small boat without meeting a soul.

Language

German or English, and Dutch if that’s easier for you. On the coast, Dutch holidaymakers are no rarity.

Practical

Six hours’ drive to Rostock. You hear the travel costs before a date is fixed, and nothing gets added on top afterward.

No surcharge for the night, the weekend or a public holiday, and booking together costs the same as on your own. For a stay of several days I ask for a deposit, because by then I’ve already booked a cottage or room. Off season that’s strikingly cheap here.

Who I come here for

For women who want, just once, to really get away. Out of their house, out of their role, out of a rhythm that’s been the same for years. Also for women who are married and have long missed what they never say out loud. For widows, in whom the body speaks up while the grieving isn’t done. And just as much for couples who want to share something in a place where nobody knows them.

What a stay like this looks like

We usually start slowly: arriving, coffee, and an hour when nothing has to happen yet. After that it’s up to you. A walk on the beach where the wind drowns out everything, an afternoon on the water, or not going out at all.

What makes this region unusual is the emptiness. In November there’s sometimes genuinely no one on the beach at Warnemünde. That does something to people: a layer comes off that a city keeps in place.

Discretion in practice

I do this with no one around me. No agency behind me, no colleague reading along, no records your name ends up in. I don’t keep messages longer than I need to.

In a region where the villages are small, an unfamiliar car stands out. So I park it wherever you want it, if need be at the edge of the village with the last stretch on foot. Off season a holiday rental on the coast is often the most discreet option there is: your own door, no front desk, and no one counting what time you leave.

How a first meeting goes

First a few messages back and forth. I ask something, you ask something, and somewhere along the way you know whether this is for you. For a stay of this length we usually call once as well.

On the day of arrival we take plenty of time. For almost everyone that beginning takes longer than they expected, and across two days there’s all the room for it.

After that I stay quiet, unless you get in touch.

Changing your mind is fine

Halfway through too, and even if you’ve set aside a long weekend for it. No problem, and certainly no failure.

It happens here more often than elsewhere that a stay goes a different way than planned, usually quieter. The surroundings play their part in that.
