A city that raises no eyebrow

Berlin has a reputation in this area and it mostly holds up. Not because so much happens, but because so little comment comes with it. You can stand in a hotel lobby here at four in the morning with someone you met that afternoon and the night porter doesn’t even look up from his screen. For anyone worried about being seen, this is the most comfortable city in Germany.

That also makes it a good place for a first time. The anonymity takes away a layer of tension that a smaller city does carry.

Why you make it a stay

From Amsterdam, Berlin is a bit over six hours by car, or about the same by train. For a single evening that’s nonsense. So we’d rather plan two days, or a weekend, in which there’s really time to get somewhere without watching the clock.

In practice that works out better than a short booking close to home. The first hours are an adjustment for almost everyone. If you don’t have to rush those hours because there’s a train back, a lot more is left.

What we can do together

Berlin has something for every mood. The Tiergarten on a morning when the city isn’t awake yet. The Spree, with little boats and that odd mix of baroque and concrete. Museumsinsel if you want to see something. Prenzlauer Berg for breakfasts that run until two in the afternoon. Kreuzberg for the evening. And everywhere cafés where you can sit for hours without anyone asking whether you want to order something else.

If you’d rather have none of that, that’s entirely fine. A hotel room with the curtains drawn is just as much a stay in Berlin as a cultural programme.

We talk in the language you want

German, Dutch or English. Berlin is so international that English works everywhere, but if you’d rather speak German that’s fine too. You can switch halfway, which happens more often than you’d think.

Who I come here for

For Dutch women who live or work here and notice that their social life has fallen away with the distance. Also for German women who’d rather meet someone from outside their own world. For married women who haven’t felt a hand rest on their back with attention in years. Just as much for women who have recently ended up alone and don’t know how you start again.

Discretion, here too

Anonymous isn’t the same as careless. I arrive as an ordinary guest, I don’t walk arm in arm with you through the lobby if you’d rather not, and I discuss you with no one. What we agree about how we behave in public, I stick to.

No surcharge for the night, the weekend or a public holiday, and booking as a couple costs the same as on your own. For a capital, Berlin is strikingly affordable, which makes a two-day stay here cheaper than a single night in Munich.

An evening or a stay

Two days is the standard here, and that’s not only because of the travel time. Berlin is a city you disappear into the moment you arrive, and that effect needs a night to work.

What women mention most often afterwards about a stay here is exactly that: that there was no one who expected anything of them, for two whole days. No neighbours, no acquaintances, no morning that starts at eight.

If you don’t know how long, go for generous; you can always cut it short along the way.

Agreements about money

Everything is fixed beforehand: what we do, how long, and what it costs, including the travel cost that comes with this distance. Nothing gets added afterwards and there are no items that only appear at the last minute.

There are no surcharges for the evening, the night, the weekend or public holidays. Booking together costs the same. And a deposit I only ask for a longer stay, because I reserve accommodation for that.
