A province with a heavy past

Hainaut is the old industrial heart of Wallonia: coal, steel, glass. Most of that is gone now, and it has left behind a landscape of terrils, the cone-shaped slag heaps you see everywhere, with forest growing over them.

The biggest city is Charleroi, which has a reputation it does not fully deserve. Mons is smaller and prettier, and there is more culture there. Around them lie the Borinage and the Walloon countryside.

About the language

French is the everyday language here, and I do not speak it beyond a few pleasantries. Dutch, German and English I do. In Charleroi and Mons you get by fine in English, and it is fairer to say this up front than afterwards.

What the province has to offer

Charleroi has had an odd second youth in recent years, with city walks along its industrial heritage that are genuinely worth your time. Mons has a Grand-Place that ranks among the finest in Belgium and a belfry on the World Heritage list.

There is also the Canal du Centre with its boat lifts, another World Heritage site, and the woods around Chimay and Beaumont in the south.

Practical

From Amsterdam, Charleroi is about three hours. Too far for a short evening, fine for a night.

The travel-cost figure is fixed before there is a date, and it does not move after that. Evening, night, weekend, public holiday: all the same rate. Booking as a couple costs nothing extra.

Discretion

In Charleroi an unfamiliar face draws no attention. In the smaller towns of the Borinage or the south of the province it is different, and I take that into account: I park where you want, no flowers, no conspicuous arrival, and a story ready if anyone asks who I am.

Beyond that, I work alone. No agency, no colleague reading along, no records where your name ends up. I delete messages the moment they are no longer needed.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have long missed what home no longer has words for. For women who stayed in the same town after a divorce, with all the looks that come with it.

Widows, for whom the body is further along than the mind. And plenty of women from the villages here, where none of this gets talked about and where a city of two hundred thousand is exactly why it helps.

Where you draw a line it stays drawn, even if you want to move it in the moment. About you I talk to no one, not now and not later.

How a first meeting goes

A few messages first. I ask something, you ask something, and somewhere along the way you notice whether it fits. A call works too, and a coffee first on neutral ground.

On the day itself we take plenty of time for the start. For almost everyone that takes longer than they expected beforehand, and it makes the rest easier.

After that it stays quiet from my side. No message the next morning, no reminder months later.

Where we meet

Usually a hotel. Charleroi has plenty, partly because of the airport, and among the business travelers a guest who stays one night stands out to no one. For a longer stay a holiday home in the south of the province often works even better: your own entrance, no front desk.

Home works too, as long as you are comfortable there. That is the only thing that counts.
