What a yoni massage is and how it unfolds

What is a yoni massage and what exactly happens?

A yoni massage is a tantric massage of the female genitals, aimed at deep relaxation and at feeling again what is there. Climax is not the goal. It is allowed to happen, but the moment it becomes a goal the whole massage changes.

That is the short version. Below is what the word means, what happens in practice, and what to watch for if you are thinking about it.

Where the word comes from

Yoni is the Sanskrit word used for the vulva in tantric texts. It is not a euphemism invented later to make it sound nicer; it comes from the same tradition as the word tantra itself, which literally means weave.

That said, it is good to know that what the West calls “tantra” is largely a modern form. Scholars of religion point out that sexual practices were rare in the original tantric traditions and reserved for initiates. What you are offered today as a yoni massage is bodywork that uses a few principles from that tradition: slowness, breath, attention. That is something other than an ancient ritual.

I say that explicitly, because the spiritual packaging is sometimes used to make something more expensive than it is.

What happens in practice

A session does not begin on the massage table but in a conversation. What do you want, what do you definitely not want, and how do you stop. That last one we agree on before anything happens: one word, and everything stops, no explanation needed.

After that it starts with the rest of your body. Back, legs, shoulders, hands. This is not a warm-up that simply comes with it; it is the reason the rest works. A body that is still on guard feels touch as something that happens instead of something that lands.

Only once there is relaxation does it shift inward. Slow, with far more time than you are used to, and with attention for what is happening instead of where it is going. There are check-ins along the way.

Count on a few hours. Under two hours it becomes rushed, and rushing is exactly what takes the effect away.

What women say afterward

Rarely that it was arousing, though that happens too. What comes back most often is something else: that somewhere something let go that had been stuck for years.

Sometimes tears come with it. That is normal, it is not discomfort that alarms me, and it does not need to be solved. Stuck tension and emotions that have long been tucked away are allowed to come out then.

Others mostly notice their surprise that so much time went by without anything “happening.” That is exactly the intention, and it takes getting used to for anyone accustomed to sex with a direction.

What to watch for

Ask what concretely happens. “Tantra massage” and “yoni massage” are also used as tidy packaging for an erotic massage with an endpoint. That is a fine service, but then you need to know that is what you are buying. A good provider explains the difference without your having to ask.

Ask whether climax is the goal. The answer tells you right away where you have landed.

Ask about the duration. Anyone offering this in an hour is doing something else.

Watch the spiritual charge. You do not have to believe in anything to get something from it. If you feel the relaxation, that is enough; words like chakras and energy channels are a way to describe what your body experiences, not a requirement.

Who it is for

For women who want contact with their own body again, for whatever reason. Women who have not been touched for years, who are starting over after a divorce or a loss, who never learned to relax under touch because something was always expected of it. And women who are simply curious, which is a completely valid reason.

It is less suitable if you want something that has to be quick, or if you are really looking for a solution to something you would be better off discussing with a sexologist or therapist. In that case I will just say so.

What else comes with tantra is on Tantra, including the honest answer to the question of whether it is sexual.

And a last practical note: you decide what you keep on, during the session too. Some women stay partly clothed the first time, and that changes nothing about what the massage does. Anyone who thinks everything has to come off because that is simply part of it starts with a threshold that does not need to be there. Say beforehand what you want, and the conversation does not have to be about it during the session.

If you are unsure whether this is something for you, start with a call instead of a booking. From how someone answers these questions you learn more within five minutes than from any page, including this one.
