Sexual self-image
The picture you have of yourself as a sexual being, and how it steers your choices and pleasure.
What is sexual self-image?
Sexual self-image is the picture you have of yourself as a sexual being: how you feel about your own sexuality, your body, and your attractiveness. It helps steer the choices you make and how free you feel during sex. A strong sexual self-image links to more sexual satisfaction.

How sexual self-image plays out in practice
You often only notice it when things go wrong. Take a woman who keeps wondering in the bedroom how she looks, instead of feeling what’s happening. That’s sexual self-image getting in the way. People with a negative self-image struggle to show themselves to a partner in a natural way, which brings anxiety and shrinks the appetite for intimacy. They feel constantly judged. A stronger self-image does the opposite: it makes room to be present instead of monitoring yourself.
What it’s built from
Sexual self-image isn’t one thing. According to Evans-Paulson and colleagues (2021), it’s your view of your own sexuality and your feeling about yourself as a sexual being, and it consists of several layers: sexual self-confidence, sexual openness, and sexual anxiety. Those same researchers point out that self-confidence in particular ties to how well sex works and how satisfied people are with it. The self-image forms over the years, out of experiences, upbringing, and the messages you took on about body and sex.
Why a strong sexual self-image is worth it
The payoff is freedom. Someone who feels comfortable as a sexual being dares to ask for what they want and dares to say no without guilt. Sexual self-confidence shapes almost every sexual choice you make: with whom, when, and whether you hold yourself back. For you, a stronger self-image means you feel more and watch less. Together it means less unspoken insecurity standing between you. What it doesn’t do: a good self-image doesn’t make you immune to an off night, and you don’t build it in one night.
What you can do yourself
- Notice when you’re judging yourself during sex. That watching is usually the self-image talking, and attention to it is the first step.
- Turn your attention to what you feel instead of how you look. That gets you out of your head and back into your body.
- Start small with saying what you want. Every time a wish is taken seriously, your self-image grows a little.
What sexual self-image is not
“A good sexual self-image means always being in the mood.” No. It’s about how you feel about yourself as a sexual being, not about the amount of appetite.
“It’s fixed.” Also no. It’s shaped by experience and it can move with new experiences, for better or worse.
What I see myself
I do this work as a gigolo, and I see how often an insecure sexual self-image stands between a woman and her pleasure. Not because there’s anything wrong with her body, but because she’s used to looking at herself through someone else’s eyes. What helps most isn’t a compliment, but attention without judgment and without rush. When nobody is watching or rating, that self-monitoring drops away on its own. Then the self-image often turns out more resilient than expected.

Questions about this term
What is sexual self-image?
Sexual self-image is the picture you have of yourself as a sexual being: how you feel about your own sexuality, your body, and your attractiveness. It consists of sexual self-confidence, openness, and sexual anxiety, and it helps steer the sexual choices you make and how free you feel.
Can you improve your sexual self-image?
Yes. Sexual self-image is shaped by experience and can move with new experiences. Notice when you’re judging yourself during sex, turn your attention to what you feel instead of how you look, and say what you want in small ways. Every time a wish is taken seriously, the self-image grows a little.
Does sexual self-image affect your sexual pleasure?
Yes. Research by Evans-Paulson and colleagues (2021) shows that sexual self-confidence in particular ties to how well sex works and how satisfied people are with it. A negative self-image brings self-monitoring and evaluation anxiety instead, so you feel less and the appetite for intimacy drops.
Who can you turn to with questions about your sexual self-image?
If a negative sexual self-image really gets in your way, a sexologist or psychologist can help; your GP can refer you. Myself, I’m Victor, a gigolo, not a therapist, but I work in a way where nobody rates you and nothing has to happen. Curious how that helps you get out of your head? That can be done with no obligation or through chatting for free.
