Polysaturated

Being poly and still keeping the door shut for a while: the point where you have enough relationships and no new one can be added.

What is polysaturated?

Polysaturated means that someone is polyamorous but has no room right now for a new relationship or partner. The reason is the number of existing relationships, or simply too little time and energy. So you’re poly by nature, but full for the moment: the door is shut for now.

Where the word comes from

Polysaturated is a word people in polyamorous relationships came up with themselves. Researcher Elisabeth Sheff describes it this way: polysaturated describes the phenomenon of poly people having enough relationships; they have as many as they can handle and no time or emotional room for another partner. More Than Two’s glossary adds that a lack of time also plays a part, so that a new relationship simply doesn’t fit anymore. How much someone can handle varies a lot from person to person and from one stage of life to another: one person is already at their ceiling with two relationships, another isn’t.

Why polysaturated is a healthy limit

The appeal of the word is that it makes a limit sayable without it feeling like rejection. Being poly doesn’t mean endless room for one more person; everyone has a ceiling on time and attention. For you, “I’m polysaturated right now” can be a way to say no to a new date without denying that you’re poly. For your existing partners it means they don’t get crowded out. What it isn’t: a permanent label. The limit can shift as soon as time or energy frees up, for instance when a busy stretch is over or a relationship moves into a calmer phase. So calling yourself polysaturated is more a snapshot than a final lock on the door.

Where this fits on this site

If you feel polysaturated and notice something is nagging anyway, a conversation can help you sort out what you really want. I don’t coach poly networks, but I’ll think it through with you, no judgment. You can read how a first meeting goes at the conversation beforehand.
