Polyfidelity

A polyamorous relationship that closes over time: several equal partners who pledge faithfulness to the group and to no one outside it.

What is polyfidelity?

Polyfidelity is a form of polyamory in which a group of three or more partners decides to be romantically and sexually faithful to each other and to no one outside the group. All members count as equal, and the relationship is closed: no new partners join without everyone’s agreement. Think of it as monogamy, but with more than two people.

How polyfidelity works

Polyfidelity often starts as an open polyamorous network that, at a certain point, closes the door. Wikipedia describes it as a relationship form in which all members count as equal and agree to keep their sexual and romantic activity within the group. That asks for the same communication as any poly relationship, plus an explicit agreement about the boundary to the outside. Letting new members in is possible, but only with everyone’s agreement, which means the group itself guards the gate. In practice it’s often a triad of three or a quad of four people who together form one closed whole. Some groups also agree to fluid bonding, having sex within the circle without a condom because the boundary to the outside is shut.

Why people choose polyfidelity

The appeal is in combining more than one love with the security of a closed circle. For anyone who wants polyamory but finds the constant possibility of new partners unsettling, polyfidelity brings calm: you know who belongs, and that doesn’t change on a whim. Consensual non-monogamy is by now a seriously researched field, and the review by Gupta and colleagues shows there isn’t one right form but a range of them. What polyfidelity doesn’t take away: if one person falls in love outside the group after all, it’s exactly the closed agreement that comes under pressure.

Where this fits on this site

Do you live in a polyfidelity relationship, or another poly form, and are you looking for a discreet date outside your group? Then that’s by definition a question for the whole circle, not something to do quietly. If you’d like to spar calmly first about what does and doesn’t fit, that’s what the conversation beforehand is for, no judgment.

  • Monogamy. Faithfulness to one partner, whose idea of faithfulness polyfidelity borrows but extends to a group.

Questions about polyfidelity

  1. What is polyfidelity?

Polyfidelity is a form of polyamory in which three or more equal partners pledge faithfulness to each other and to no one outside the group. The relationship is closed: no new partners join without everyone’s agreement. Think of it as monogamy, but with more than two people.

  2. What is the difference between polyfidelity and polyamory?

Polyamory is in principle open to new relationships; polyfidelity is a polyamorous relationship that’s locked shut. In polyfidelity the members pledge faithfulness to the group, and new partners join only with everyone’s agreement. So it’s the closed variant within polyamory.
