Quad

The relationship form of four, how it often grows out of two couples, and why structure on its own does not solve jealousy.

What is a quad?

Quad is, in polyamory, a relationship form of four people who are romantically or sexually connected. Not everyone has to be involved with everyone. A quad often forms when two couples get to know each other and start dating. The term describes the number, not the ranking.

In Dutchno common word of its own; the English quad is used
Also known asa four-way relationship; a closed quad when the four are only with each other, an open quad when there are also contacts outside the four
Categorya relationship form within polyamory and ethical non-monogamy
Not to be confused withswinging, which is about recreational sex, or a one-off foursome without any further bond
Applies tofour people who are romantically or sexually connected, in changing combinations
Core to knowthe form says how many people belong to it, not who is the most important

How a quad forms

A quad is one of the names for a polyamorous bond by the number of people in it. The terminology within polyamory calls three people a triad and four people a quad. The most common route to one is that two existing couples get to know each other and start dating.

That very route has a pitfall. Polyamory author Franklin Veaux noted in a piece about quads that two couples sometimes form a closed quad because they think that structure prevents jealousy. His observation is that this usually does not work: anyone who tries to settle insecurity with an agreement instead of talking it through ends up disappointed.

Why people choose a quad

The appeal is that the four already understand each other. Two couples share a social life, holidays, and sometimes a household, and everyone knows where the other comes from. For people who spend a lot of time together, that gives a foundation you have to build up from scratch with separate contacts.

What a quad does not do is solve jealousy by nailing the form shut. A closed agreement does not take away the insecurity underneath it, and four people means six connections that all ask for attention. If things run rough between two of the four, the other two feel that too.

What I notice about it

Couples who talk to me about this almost always hope a fixed form will bring the calm they are looking for. I’m Victor, a gigolo with a background as a psychotherapist, and what I see back matches what Veaux describes: the agreement holds as long as the conversation underneath it keeps running. The moment that conversation stalls, the structure starts to shift, not the other way round.

Where this fits on my site

If you are in a quad or another poly bond and want attention or adventure that does not burden your home situation, a date with me can fit there. The page on what I do lays out how I go about it, discreetly and with clear boundaries set in advance. If you are unsure, feel free to ask your question first.
