Closed group

Staying small and staying familiar, instead of open to everyone.

What is a closed group?

A closed group is a fixed circle of swingers or play partners who only play among themselves and admit no new people. The circle stays small and familiar; anyone who wants in can only join with the agreement of everyone already in it. Trust and a clear overview come first.

How does a closed group work?

A closed group doesn’t limit what happens, only who is there. Swinging is the recreational swapping of partners, and a closed group does that within a fixed circle instead of at an open party. The principle resembles what the encyclopedia writes about polyfidelity: the members keep their activity among themselves, and new people join only with the agreement of everyone already in it.

Don’t confuse it with closed swinging, which in Green’s Dictionary of Slang refers to swap parties where only couples are allowed, no singles. That is about the makeup of a party, not about a private circle.

Why do people choose a closed group?

What a closed group gives you is calm. In a fixed circle you know everyone, you know how people handle boundaries and safety, so you don’t have to size up who you’re dealing with every single time. For couples who find swinging exciting but the open scene too big, a closed group offers the intimacy without the anonymity.

A small circle that closes itself off can get stifling too. When the agreements aren’t said out loud now and then, a habit creeps in where no one dares to say no anymore.
