House

For anyone who meets the word house in the leather scene and wants to know what such an organized group actually is.

What is a house?

A house is, in BDSM, an organized group within the scene with its own lineage, led by a master or mistress. Rank, protocol and knowledge get passed down from the top, from experienced members to new ones. It is about structure and handing things on. It is sometimes called a leather family.

How a house works

A house resembles a guild. There is a leading figure, usually an experienced master or mistress, and below them members with a rank you earn rather than get. The leather scene has had that form for a long time: the so-called old-guard traditions were passed on through mentors, with a code of conduct and a uniform you were only allowed to wear after a while. A build-up like that gives the group a memory. In her study of an SM community (2011), anthropologist Staci Newmahr describes how such circles run on mentorship, recognition and belonging. A house makes that explicit: it sets down who learns from whom, and what you need to know before you may go further.

Why people join a house

A house gives you something to hold on to and a place to learn. For anyone who wants to go into the deep end seriously, guidance from experienced people is safer than figuring everything out alone, and the sense of belonging weighs heavily in a world that is little understood outside the scene. There is a shadow side too. Where rank and access sit with a single leader, dependence can grow, and not every house handles that power with equal care. You can spot a good house by how it treats beginners, not by how strict it sounds.

Where this fits on my site

I work independently and do not belong to a house, but I know the protocols and how they are built well. If you want to taste that structured side of BDSM once, with someone who builds it up calmly and safely, you can do that with me. How I do that is on my services. You are always welcome to ask first, with no obligation.
