Harem

For anyone who comes across the word in poly or BDSM circles and wonders what exactly is meant by it.

What is a harem?

A harem in BDSM and polyamory is a group of submissives who commit to one dominant, usually with an internal ranking. The word is Arabic in origin and originally meant the enclosed part of a household. In the scene it is not about a place but about the relationship form: who belongs, and who stands where in relation to the others.

How a harem is put together

What makes a harem a harem is the ranking. The dominant stands in the middle, and the submissives each have their own place: a first, a second, sometimes a newcomer who still has to grow. The place is everything. The word points historically to exactly such a build. Wiktionary traces it back to the Arabic ḥarīm, “the forbidden”, and the encyclopedia describes it as the circle of women around one man in a traditional household, with its own hierarchy. The scene borrows that image and makes it consensual: everyone chooses their place and can also leave it again.

Why this draws people

For the dominant the appeal is in the overview: several people who entrust themselves, each with a role of their own. For the submissives a fixed place can give calm, and the other members feel more like family than like competition. That is at the same time the vulnerable spot. A ranking that is not kept fairly breeds jealousy, and then “where do I stand” becomes a wound instead of a reassurance. A harem runs on agreements and attention, not by itself.

Where this fits on my site

I work one on one, so I don’t run a harem. I do know the tension of ranking and devotion in BDSM up close, and I’m glad to talk it through with you. If you want to see what I do do, take a look at my services. You can always ask a question first, with no obligation.

A harem is a circle of submissives under one dominant, with an internal ranking. A house is an organized scene group with its own line, protocol and passing on of knowledge. A harem is about the people and their place; a house about the structure around it.
