What is brandmerken?

Brandmerken is the Dutch word for branding: setting a permanent scar by locally burning the skin with heated metal, a cautery pen or current. The mark that remains is the goal; the burn is the way there. Healing takes weeks, and the scar stays.

What a brand is, medically speaking

The scene talks about a mark. A doctor looks at the same spot and sees a burn, and that difference in language is the reason the risk is often underestimated.

Thuisarts.nl sorts burns by depth. With first-degree the skin is red and painful but not broken. With second-degree the skin is red, blisters form and it hurts. With deep second-degree the skin is blotchy, pink and red with white patches. With third-degree the skin is yellow-white, brown or black and feels stiff.
