Brandmerken
What the scene calls a mark goes by another name at the doctor's office.
What is brandmerken?
Brandmerken is the Dutch word for branding: setting a permanent scar by locally burning the skin with heated metal, a cautery pen or current. The mark that remains is the goal; the burn is the way there. Healing takes weeks, and the scar stays.
| What with | heated metal, a cautery pen with a heated wire tip, or electrosurgery |
| Medically speaking | a deliberately made deep burn |
| What the skin does | heal with scar tissue, and that tissue does not go away |
| What for | a mark of ownership within BDSM, or permanent body art |
What a brand is, medically speaking
The scene talks about a mark. A doctor looks at the same spot and sees a burn, and that difference in language is the reason the risk is often underestimated.
Thuisarts.nl sorts burns by depth. With first-degree the skin is red and painful but not broken. With second-degree the skin is red, blisters form and it hurts. With deep second-degree the skin is blotchy, pink and red with white patches. With third-degree the skin is yellow-white, brown or black and feels stiff.
That last description is exactly what a brand is meant to be, because a wound that closes neatly and quickly leaves no permanent mark. The same source says that ordinary second-degree burns usually heal within two weeks and rarely leave scars, and that it is mainly third-degree burns that produce scars. So whoever wants a brand wants, by definition, the category that belongs at a doctor’s.
What to watch for
Two practical things. The first is the wound itself: thuisarts.nl advises cooling a burn right away for ten to twenty minutes under lukewarm, gently running water. That holds even when the burn was made on purpose.
The second is when to get help. Call the doctor for a burn larger than half a hand, or if there is a yellow-white, brown or black dry patch in the wound. With a brand that last one is not an alarm signal but the intended result, and that is exactly why this is something for someone who does it professionally rather than for a bedroom.

What is brandmerken?
Brandmerken is the Dutch word for setting a permanent scar by locally burning the skin, with heated metal, a cautery pen or current. In English it is called branding. The scar is the goal; the burn is the way there.
How deep is a brand, really?
Deep enough to leave a scar, and that is the category a doctor looks at. Thuisarts.nl states that ordinary second-degree burns usually heal within two weeks and rarely leave scars, and that it is mainly third-degree burns that produce scars. So a brand aims, by definition, at that deeper category.
