Afterglow is the relaxed, connected state that can last after sex, sometimes for up to two days. It is the aftermath of arousal: the tension drops, the body comes to rest and a feeling of satisfaction and closeness stays behind. Afterglow belongs to the resolution phase of the sexual response cycle.

How afterglow happens
Afterglow is what stays behind once the peak has passed and the body settles back down. In the resolution phase the muscles relax, the heart rate drops and blood drains away from the genitals, while a quiet satisfaction stays behind. That feeling does not fade right away. Psychologist Andrea Meltzer and her colleagues followed newlywed couples for two weeks and found that sexual satisfaction stayed elevated for about 48 hours after sex. They read that afterglow as a mechanism that binds partners to each other between one time in bed and the next.
Why people treasure the afterglow
The draw is in what the afterglow does to the mood afterward. The performing is over, the tension is gone, and what stays is closeness. In that same study, the couples with a stronger afterglow also reported higher relationship satisfaction, both right away and months later.
