The state next door

Lower Saxony runs the full length of Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel, and still surprisingly few Dutch visitors get past Bad Bentheim or the outlet mall at Ochtrup. A pity, because it’s one of the calmest and most open parts of Germany there is.

For a booking the location matters a lot. If you live in the border region, near Nordhorn, Meppen or Lingen, you’re closer to me than someone in Maastricht. Hanover is about four hours from Amsterdam, Braunschweig a little more.

Two big cities, plenty of room around them

Hanover is the state capital: half a million residents, a lot of green, and a center that was rebuilt after the war and so is more practical than pretty. The Maschsee and the Herrenhäuser Gärten more than make up for that.

Braunschweig is smaller, older in character, and has that Burgplatz with the lion where a few centuries slip away the moment you stand there.

Beyond that lie the Lüneburg Heath, the Harz, the Wadden coast near East Frisia. If you’re weighing up a stay of a few days, that’s beautiful country, and it’s closer than the Ardennes.

Language

German, English or Dutch. In the border region Dutch is usually no trouble at all. Further into the country we simply switch. Changing halfway through is fine.

Practical

Travel costs depend on the distance, and you know them beforehand, before anything is fixed. That’s all it comes to. No surcharges for the evening, the night, the weekend or public holidays, and booking as a pair costs nothing extra.

For the border region a long evening works. For Hanover and Braunschweig I’d rather plan a night or a two-day stay, because otherwise I’d spend more time on the highway than with you.

Who I come here for

For women in a marriage where this subject died out years ago. For women starting over after a divorce who don’t know how that goes. For widows, startled by what their body wants again. And just as much for women in a village where there’s no one to talk about this with, and this state has plenty of those.

Discretion in the countryside

Large parts of Lower Saxony are thinly populated, and in a German village people watch who comes and goes just as they do in a village in Drenthe. I set the arrangement to that.

I park the car where you want it, outside the village if need be, and walk the rest. No flowers, no greeting that turns heads on the street. If anyone asks who I am, I stick to the story you thought up.

Many women choose a hotel in the nearest town rather than home for exactly this reason. Sensible, and I’m glad to think it through with you.

How it goes

A message with where you are, roughly what you’re looking for and when you could manage. Two sentences will do. Within twenty-four hours you’ll have an answer.

After that we keep talking until it feels right to you: by text, by phone, or first a coffee that nothing has to come of. Because this state lies close by, that last option is genuinely doable here.

With couples the conversation usually starts with whether it’s a good idea. If it feels to one of you like a favor to the other, I notice, and then we don’t do it.

If there’s a real conversation underneath it, there’s plenty of room. One watches, the other joins in, or neither does. Either of you can end it at any moment, at no cost.

What you can expect from me

On time, well turned out, and without the impatience of someone with somewhere to be afterward. I listen without pushing you one way, and there’s very little I haven’t heard before.

Where you draw a line it stays drawn, even when you want to move it yourself in the moment. About you I talk to no one.
