The province on the sea

West Flanders is the only Belgian province with a coast. Seventy kilometres of beach from De Panne to Knokke. It also has Bruges, which sits on every list of Europe’s most beautiful cities, and in the south the hill country around Ypres and Poperinge.

From Amsterdam, Bruges is about three hours. Too far for a short evening, just right for a night or a weekend by the sea.

Why the coast is worth it here

Out of season the Belgian coast is empty, cheap and surprisingly beautiful. An apartment in Ostend or De Haan, a walk along the beach with wind that drowns out everything, and warming up somewhere afterward. It works exactly the way it works on Texel or in Zeeland. The farther from your ordinary life, the more room opens up.

For a two-day stay an apartment also has a practical edge over a hotel: your own door, no front desk, and no one who sees you come or go.

Language

Dutch. English and German work too. I do not speak French, which is nowhere a problem in West Flanders.

Discretion in the municipalities

Outside Bruges and the coastal towns, West Flanders is a province of small municipalities where people know each other. In high season you disappear among the tourists at the coast. In winter an unfamiliar car stands out instead.

I take that into account. Parking where you want, no flowers, no conspicuous arrival, and a story ready in case someone asks who I am.

Practical

Three hours’ drive from Amsterdam. You hear the travel costs that come with it before we fix anything, and nothing is added on afterward.

A night costs the same as an afternoon of equal length, on a Sunday or Easter Monday too. Booking together costs no extra. Do reserve well ahead, and in the summer months further still.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have long missed what is no longer talked about at home. For women who plan a few days by the sea for themselves after a divorce and would rather not spend those days alone.

Widows. And many women from the small municipalities of this province, where the social network is tight and for exactly that reason tolerates nothing of this kind.

Changing your mind is allowed

Halfway through too, and even if you had arranged a trip and an excuse for it. No problem, and certainly no failure.

Dates regularly go a different way than planned. Sometimes it turns quieter than intended, sometimes not at all. Which way it goes makes no difference to me, as long as you look back on it well.

You are committed to nothing by emailing me. Some women email me with a single question and leave it there. Others get in touch again half a year later as if no time had passed.

I will not push, I send no reminder, and my calendar does not need to be full. If it is not right, it is not right.

What it is not

There is no organisation behind me. No catalogue, no agent passing your preferences along, no database your name stays in. From the first sentence you are writing with the person who will later ring the bell.

And it is not a performance. Your body does not have to look like anything, your age is no objection, and what you would like you do not have to defend to me.

What women often say afterward

It is rarely about the sex first. What comes up more often is the calm. That no one watched a clock, that nothing was rushed through, that a question about how it really was carried no agenda toward something else.

And after that, almost always and usually laughing, that they took far too long to write.
