Wallonia, and honest about the language

This is the first province on this site where French is the everyday language, and I have to be clear about that straight away: I speak Dutch, German and English. Not French, no further than ordering a coffee.

In practice we manage. In Liège plenty of people speak English, and in the East Cantons around Eupen and Sankt Vith German is even the official language, which makes it easier for me than anywhere else in Wallonia. But if you want a conversation in French, I am not the right one.

What the province has to offer

Liège itself lies stretched out along the Meuse, with the Montagne de Bueren climbing four hundred steps straight up and a Sunday market along the water that runs for kilometers.

South and east the real Ardennes begins: Spa with its springs, the High Fens with peat ground and wooden boardwalks, and the East Cantons where you hear German and the signposts are bilingual.

For a two-day stay that area is excellent: quiet, green, and with enough small hotels and holiday homes where no one asks what you have come to do.

Practical

From Amsterdam, Liège is about two and a half hours. Doable for a long evening and nicer as a night.

You hear the travel-cost figure before a date is fixed, and it does not change after that. Surcharges do not exist here: not for the night, not for the weekend, not for a public holiday. Booking as a couple costs the same as alone.

Discretion

In Liège itself little stands out: it is a city of more than a hundred and ninety thousand with a lot of movement. In the villages of the Ardennes it is different, and I take that into account.

I park where you want, even if that is at the edge of the village. No flowers, no conspicuous arrival, and a story ready if anyone asks who I am.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have waited years for a touch with attention in it. For Dutch-speaking women who ended up here for work and outside the office have really no one.

Widows, for whom grief and longing keep running into each other. And women in an Ardennes village of three hundred, where this can be discussed with truly no one.

Why a stay here often works better

The Ardennes were made for two days rather than one evening. A cottage with its own drive, woods around it, and no reception to pass.

That has an effect I can hardly overstate: when you are not in your own surroundings and there is no return trip running in your head either, something opens that stays shut in a hotel room at eleven at night.

If you are unsure about the length, go generous. Home earlier is always possible.

Changing your mind is fine

Halfway through too, and also when you have taken a day off for it. That is not a failure, and for me it causes no problem at all.

In practice it regularly goes differently than planned. One time it settles, another time it does not. I have no stake in which way it goes, except that you look back on it feeling good.

What it is not

There is no organization behind me: no catalog of men, no middleman, no client file. The person on the other end of your first message is the same one who comes later.

There is nothing to prove here either. There is no standard your body or your age has to meet, and what you want you do not have to defend here.

What women often say afterwards

Almost never is it about the sex first. What does come back: that it was so calm, that there was no hurry in it, that someone asked a question and then actually listened.

And the sigh that it took months before that first line was typed, when afterwards it was nothing at all.
