Sex doll
The object itself, and agalmatophilia: the attraction to dolls and statues.
What is a sex doll?
A sex doll is a life-size doll in the shape of a sex partner, meant for sexual use. These days it is usually made of silicone or TPE, materials that imitate a skin-like feel. A doll can be a whole body, or just a head, pelvis, or other part.

From doll to object of desire
A sex doll is first of all an object, an advanced sex toy. The attraction to dolls and statues itself has its own name: agalmatophilia. The encyclopedia describes that as a paraphilia with sexual attraction to a statue, doll, mannequin, or similar figure, a form of object sexuality. Not everyone with a sex doll has that attraction. For most it is a means, not the object of desire itself.
Why people have one
The reasons vary: company, sex without the demands of a relationship, practice without judgment, or a fantasy that is not possible with a living person. The market is growing, but the knowledge lags behind. A scoping review by Nicola Döring and colleagues in the Journal of Medical Internet Research from 2020 looked at all the literature from 1993 to 2019 and found that so far there is no observational or experimental research that uses real dolls or robots as material. What people claim about it, from “it makes you lonely” to “it is actually healthy”, is therefore largely still unproven. What a doll does not give back is reciprocity. A doll wants nothing in return.
