One-night stand

Meant as a one-off, with no follow-up. The agreements about protection and limits do not change for it.

What is a one-night stand?

A one-night stand (abbreviated ONS) is sex with someone that is meant to be a one-off, with no wish to repeat it or to come away with a relationship. It falls under loose, uncommitted sex. The same agreements about contraception and limits apply as with any other form of sex.

What a one-night stand falls under

A one-night stand is one of the forms of uncommitted sex that researchers file under “casual sex”. Garcia, Reiber, Massey, and Merriwether describe in their review article Sexual Hookup Culture in Review of General Psychology how such short, uncommitted contacts take place between people who are not partners and expect no romantic follow-up from it. The one-off is exactly what sets a one-night stand apart from a fling or a friends-with-benefits that comes back more often.

Why people choose it, and what still applies

The appeal is the simplicity: attraction, an evening, and no expectations for the day after. For one person that is air, for another a way to find themselves again after a relationship. What a one-night stand does not change is the protection. Soa Aids Nederland holds the same line for loose contacts as always: a condom makes the chance of an STI smaller, even though it does not bring it to zero. And the one-off has to be true for both. If it happens behind a partner’s back, it is not called a one-night stand but infidelity, and that is a different story.

Where this fits on this site

What I do is not a one-night stand. A date with me is agreed, prepared, and for as long as you want, with attention that stays on you the whole time. If you want to know how that goes, look at my services. A conversation beforehand is part of it, and commits you to nothing.

A one-night stand is a form of uncommitted sex. The terms below are about the play around it.

  • Sexual acts. The overarching list of what people do sexually with each other, of which a one-night stand is an occasion.
  • Safer sex. The protection that counts just as hard at a one-off contact as with steady sex.
  • Consent. Agreement is also something both give at a one-off, and afresh per act.
  • Infidelity. What a one-off night becomes the moment it happens outside a relationship and without the partner’s knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this term

  1. What is a one-night stand?

A one-night stand is sex with someone that is meant to be a one-off, with no wish to repeat it or to come away with a relationship. The abbreviation is ONS. It falls under loose, uncommitted sex.

  2. Do the same protection agreements apply at a one-night stand?

Yes. At a one-night stand, safer sex counts just as hard as with steady sex: a condom makes the chance of an STI smaller, even though it does not bring it to zero. Consent applies in full too, per act and for both. The one-off changes nothing about that basis.

  3. Who can you turn to with questions about a one-night stand?

Victor, gigolo with twenty-five years of experience and a background as a psychotherapist. What he does is not a one-off night but an agreed, prepared date, and he is glad to explain where that differs. For the medical side, such as STI testing, your GP or a Center for Sexual Health is the place to go. You can ask questions through the contact form or first chat for free.
