What is a gas mask?
Gas mask (Dutch: gasmasker) is a mask that seals airtight over the nose and mouth and usually covers the eyes too, with a filter mounted directly on it or connected by a hose. In BDSM it is worn to dampen sight and sound and sometimes to steer breathing. The mask supplies no air, it only filters.

How a gas mask works
Like a sieve, not like an oxygen tank. The encyclopedia describes the gas mask as personal protective equipment against inhaling harmful substances. It seals over the nose and mouth and often covers the eyes too. Filtering only works if there is enough oxygen in the air to begin with. If there is not, no filter helps and the air has to come from a tank.
Why a gas mask is used in BDSM
For what it does to the face. A mask takes the expression away and leaves only two lenses, which turns a person into a figure instead of a face. Whoever wears it mostly hears themselves. Their own breathing becomes audible and the sound from outside goes dull. For rubber lovers there is the smell and the tight feel on top of that. The mask makes breathing part of the scene right away, even when that was not the plan, and that is a bigger step than a blindfold.
What to watch for with a gas mask
With a gas mask, someone stays in the room, no exceptions. Even a mask that works fine has you breathing back part of your own exhaled air. Smith, Whitelaw and Davies studied this in Ergonomics with forty workers wearing a full-face mask on a cycle ergometer. Rebreathed carbon dioxide is linked to discomfort, fatigue, dizziness, headache, muscle weakness and drowsiness, and it was talking and light work that produced more buildup, not less. That study is about work, not about sex. But it does mean that dizziness under a mask is not automatically the thrill.
Do not buy army surplus to wear. Filters from the Second World War and the Soviet era sometimes contain chrysotile or crocidolite asbestos, unused filters from that period may offer no protection at all and can be harmful because their chemical makeup has changed, and the black American C2 canister contains hexavalent chromium, a carcinogen that the military itself warns to treat with caution. Rubber ages as well, so even an unused mask straight from the box can crack and leak.
How long a mask can safely stay on, I cannot back up. There is no research on gas masks in sexual situations. Anyone who pinches the hose shut or covers the filter is doing breath control, and then the rules on that page apply, not the rules for a mask.
