Erogenous zone

The spots on the body where touch tips into arousal, and why that map runs differently for everyone.

What is an erogenous zone?

An erogenous zone (Dutch: erogene zone) is an area of the body with heightened sensitivity, where touch can bring on a sexual response such as arousal, relaxation or an orgasm. Well-known examples are the lips, nipples, neck and genitals. Which spots are sensitive varies a lot from person to person.

Why an erogenous zone is sensitive

Erogenous zones owe their sensitivity to the nerves in the skin. The encyclopedia distinguishes specific zones with “a high density of innervation,” a dense packing of nerve endings, from areas that only join in under the right conditions. That is why one spot is a switch and another at most a run-up, and why context counts: whether touch feels good or instead intrusive depends, according to the same source, on arousal, the situation and the bond between the people involved.

Why erogenous zones matter

Erogenous zones are the reason arousal does not have to start at the genitals. In a large-scale study of 704 people, the whole body turned out to be sensitive to sexual touch, with the strongest spots at the genitals, breasts and anus. That makes the map usable: taking your time along the neck, ears and thighs builds arousal without heading straight for the center. Only that map is not a template. What is a button for one person leaves another cold, so trying things out and asking works better than ticking off a list. That slow exploring of the whole map is exactly what an intimate togetherness takes its time for.

An erogenous zone is where the arousal of the sexual response cycle can be set in motion.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about erogenous zones.

  1. What is an erogenous zone?

An erogenous zone is an area of the body with heightened sensitivity, where touch can bring on a sexual response such as arousal or an orgasm. Well-known examples are the lips, nipples, neck and genitals. Which spots are sensitive varies from person to person.

  2. Are erogenous zones the same for everyone?

No, erogenous zones differ from person to person. In large-scale research the whole body turned out to be sensitive to sexual touch, with the strongest spots at the genitals, breasts and anus, but the rest of the map runs differently for everyone. Arousal, context and the relationship all help decide whether touch feels good.

  3. Who can you turn to with questions about erogenous zones?

Victor, a gigolo with about twenty-five years of experience in BDSM and a background as a psychotherapist. He takes the time to discover what your body responds to, without rushing and without a fixed script. You can reach him through the contact form or chat for free first.
