Glossary
The one garment in the closet that takes over your posture and your breathing at once.
A corset is a cinched garment around the waist that forces the posture and limits breathing. It comes as an underbust, which begins below the breasts, and as an overbust, which runs from under the arms to over the hips. Laces at the back set how tight it sits.
| Related term | tightlacing is lacing pulled extremely tight. See the encyclopedia entry. |
| Made from | fabric with steel boning, a stiff busk down the front, laces at the back |
| Two models | underbust (from below the breasts) and overbust (from under the arms) |
| What it does | force the torso into shape and rein in breathing |
| Main caveat | an hour laced tight is a different thing from wearing it daily for years |
That a corset limits breathing is not a scene story but something with figures behind it. The encyclopedia reports that moderately laced corsets lower lung capacity by 2 to 29 percent, on average 9 percent, with shortness of breath on exertion and fainting as the results.
Why a corset in particular does that is in the lung physiology. Eberlein, Schmidt, and Brower line up, in Annals of the American Thoracic Society, experiments in which the chest and belly were cinched from the outside. One detail is the point here: cinching only the chest does little, the restriction has to run down to at least the upper belly. That is where a corset sits.
Long-term wear is a different story. The encyclopedia names lasting changes to the spine, ribs, and hips in those who go into one from a young age, muscle wasting in the back and torso, and pressure on the stomach and intestines.
For one evening: lace in stages, count on exertion being harder, agree on how it can come off fast, and loosen it the moment someone gets light in the head. If you wear a corset at a BDSM date, I keep an eye on your breathing and loosen it the moment it becomes too much.
And the combination that matters: a corset plus breath play or fixed bondage stacks two restrictions. Don’t do those at the same time.

Yes. Moderately laced corsets lower lung capacity by 2 to 29 percent, on average 9 percent, with shortness of breath on exertion and fainting as known results. In lung physiology it is described that a restriction like this only works once it runs down to at least the upper belly, and that is exactly where a corset sits.
