Anti-degradation
Play you build up with praise and affirmation, as a deliberate counterpart to humiliation.
What is anti-degradation?
Anti-degradation (also called anti-humiliation play) is play that works with praise and affirmation, as a deliberate counterpart to humiliation. Instead of making someone small, you build him up: “good”, “you’re doing it exactly right”. It is the upward movement on the same axis where degradation is the downward one.
| Also called | anti-humiliation play |
| What it is | play that works with praise and affirmation instead of belittling |
| Opposite | degradation and humiliation, where the charge comes from being put down |
| Closely related to | praise kink, the arousal from praise itself |
| Why people choose it | they want to be built up, not broken down |
| Beforehand | as with any scene, you agree on what is and isn’t allowed |
What anti-degradation looks like
Where a humiliating scene works through being put down, this one does the exact opposite. The dominant partner names what is going well and makes the other person bigger instead of smaller. Good. Good boy. Just the way I wanted it. For one person that is a whole scene. For another it is a tone that runs through everything.
Why people choose anti-degradation
Affirmation is not a weak stimulus. Brain research by Izuma and colleagues shows that social approval and a good reputation light up the same reward regions in the brain as money does. So praise lands as a reward. People choose anti-degradation because they want to grow under attention instead of shrinking, and because for some, humiliation is a hard limit they would rather keep out of the scene altogether.
Anti-degradation and praise kink
The two sit close together and often blend into each other. The difference is in the emphasis. Praise kink is about the arousal from praise itself. Anti-degradation is the deliberate choice for that direction rather than being put down. Someone who says “no belittling, but affirmation” is describing what he wants. Not only what he doesn’t. Praise sits at the opposite end from being put down, and neither one is healthier than the other.
Where this fits on this site
If you notice that belittling does nothing for you and attention does everything, then that is a whole kink, not half of one. I like working with affirmation, and what you need, we settle beforehand. Feel free to look at my services, or ask your question. That costs nothing.

Finds that social approval and a good reputation activate the same reward regions in the brain as money, and that seen this way there is one common currency for rewards.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about anti-degradation
What is anti-degradation?
Anti-degradation is BDSM play that works with praise and affirmation, as a deliberate counterpart to humiliation. Instead of making someone small, you build him up with compliments and approval. Where degradation puts someone down, anti-degradation moves up on that same axis.
What is the difference between anti-degradation and a praise kink?
They sit close together, and the difference is in the emphasis. A praise kink is about the arousal from praise itself, while anti-degradation is the deliberate choice for that direction rather than being put down. Someone who goes for this mostly wants to hear praise and affirmation. Leaving out the belittling is only half the story.
