The capital of Wallonia

Namur sits at the point where the Sambre flows into the Meuse, with a huge citadel on the rock above it. It is the capital of Wallonia, and with just over a hundred and fourteen thousand residents it stays on a human scale. Easy to take in, easygoing, and with a center you can walk across in an hour.

From Amsterdam it is about three hours. Too far for a short evening, exactly right for a night or a weekend in the Ardennes.

About the language

French is the everyday language here, and I don’t speak it. Dutch, German and English I do. In Namur you get by in English; in the smaller Ardennes villages that gets harder. It isn’t an impossible problem, but it’s fairer to say so up front.

What the province has to offer

The Citadelle above Namur, with a view over both rivers. The Meuse valley toward Dinant, with the rock faces and the citadel there. The Caves of Han, one of the most impressive cave systems in Europe. And the Ardennes all around: forest, water, and villages where nothing happens.

For a two-day stay this province is one of the finest in Belgium. A small hotel or holiday house in the Ardennes has the added benefit of its own door and no front desk.

Practical

Three hours’ drive from Amsterdam. What that distance adds in travel costs you hear before anything is set, and nothing gets added to it afterward.

I charge nothing extra for the night, the weekend or a public holiday, and booking as a couple doesn’t change the price. Reserve a week or two ahead, and earlier during the school holidays, because the Ardennes fill up with Dutch guests then.

Discretion

In Namur itself an unfamiliar face doesn’t stand out. In the Ardennes villages it’s different. There people notice who comes and goes, the same as in any small country village. I park wherever you want, I don’t turn up with flowers, and I stick to whatever story you’ve come up with if anyone asks who I am.

Who I come here for

Why two days here works better than an evening

The Ardennes simply lend themselves to it. A cottage with its own driveway, forest around it, no reception to walk past and no neighbors counting what time the car leaves.

The effect of that is bigger than you’d expect. When you’re not in your own surroundings and there’s no drive home running in the back of your mind, room opens up that just doesn’t appear in a hotel room at eleven at night.

How a first meeting goes

First a few messages back and forth. I ask something, you ask something, and somewhere along the way you know whether this is for you. A call works too, and so does a coffee first with nothing having to come of it.

When the time comes, we start slowly. For almost everyone that takes longer than they guessed beforehand, and everything after it gets easier for it.

After that it stays quiet from my side, unless you let me know otherwise.

Changing your mind is allowed

Halfway through too, and also when you drove all this way for it. Nothing wrong with it, and I don’t lose any sleep over it.

Meetings regularly go a different direction than planned. I have no stake in which direction that is, except that you look back on it with a good feeling.
