The closest Belgian province

Antwerp is an hour and a half from Amsterdam. That is less than Groningen, less than Maastricht, and about the same as Eindhoven. Of everywhere outside the Netherlands, this is the easiest place to plan.

The province runs from the port in the north to the Kempen in the east, with Mechelen as its second city. Flemish, Dutch-speaking, so for me there is no language barrier at all.

What the province offers

The city of Antwerp is the clear center of gravity. Fashion, diamonds, the MAS, and nightlife that runs deep into the small hours. Mechelen is smaller, better preserved and surprisingly calm for a city wedged between two big ones.

Around them, the Kempen with their pine woods and fens, and on the other side the port district that looks like a film set at night. For a walk before the evening starts, the Kempen are especially good.

Discretion in Flanders

Flemish towns are small and people know each other, certainly outside the big city. In Antwerp itself nobody pays you any attention. In Mol, Turnhout or Lier it is different.

So I adjust to that. I park wherever you want, even if that is a good way off. No flowers, no loud greeting on the doorstep. If someone asks who I am, I stick to the story you came up with.

That is why a lot of women choose a hotel in Antwerp or Mechelen instead of home. Sensible choice, and I am glad to think it through with you.

Practical

An hour and a half of driving, and that keeps the travel costs down. You hear the amount as soon as a date comes into view, and after that it does not change.

There are no surcharges here, not for the evening, the night, a Saturday or a public holiday. Booking together costs the same as booking alone. Because the drive is short, something at shorter notice is sometimes possible, though I prefer to plan Belgium a week or two ahead.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have waited a long time for a hand that rests somewhere with attention. For women who stayed in the same town after a divorce, including the commentary that comes with it.

Widows, for whom grief and desire do not cancel each other out, however confusing that feels. And women who have never experienced anything and want to do it on their own terms instead of someone else’s.

How it goes

A message with where you are, roughly what you are looking for, and when you could. Two sentences will do. You usually hear back quickly.

After that we keep talking until it feels right for you: by text, by phone, or first a coffee that does not have to lead anywhere. On the day itself we start slowly, and you set the pace.

Where you draw a line it stays drawn, even at the moment you want to move it yourself. I talk to no one about you.

Changing your mind is allowed

Halfway through too, and also when you have set an afternoon aside for it. That is not a failure and for me it is no problem at all.

Bookings regularly go differently than planned. Sometimes it gets quieter, sometimes it does not. Which way it goes makes no difference to me, as long as you look back on it well.

If you are still on the fence

Writing commits you to nothing. Some women email me with one question about how it works and leave it there. Others get back in touch six months later.

No pushing, no reminder, no calendar that has to be filled. If it is not right, it is not right.
