Travel Companion

Travel gets twice as good when you share it. Dinner in a city you don’t know. A walk along the water as the sun goes down. Why do people bring company along when they travel? Traveling alone can be wonderful. The freedom, a pace that is entirely your own. But in the evening the loneliness sometimes hits without warning. You see something beautiful and there is no one to say it to. You sit at a table for two, alone, while couples around you laugh and order champagne. That feels heavier than being alone at home, precisely because there is so much to share and no one to share it with. With someone beside you, that changes right away. Every view becomes a shared moment. Every meal a conversation instead of silence, and sometimes a silence that feels good because you know I am right there.

There is something practical at play too, something people often underestimate before they live it. In an unfamiliar place it helps when someone thinks along with you, sorts out the taxi and stays calm when the train is delayed and the platform changes with no announcement. That sense of safety gives you room to really give yourself over to the trip itself. A lot of women notice they dare to do things they would never attempt on their own. A late walk down a strange street you would avoid in daylight. Or something closer to home, an evening where you let yourself be spoiled, with no shame, without having to prove anything. To me that belongs just as much as the view from the balcony.
