What is a wooden horse?

A wooden horse (Dutch: houten paard, also Spaanse ezel, Spanish donkey) is originally a torture device: a trestle with a sharp top edge that someone has to straddle, so their own weight causes pain. In the BDSM scene a version of it exists as play furniture. Either way, its shape makes it intense and not without risk.

Where the wooden horse comes from

The wooden horse is centuries old, and its origins are grim. According to the encyclopedic description, it is a torture device that exists in two variants, both of which cause pain by using the person’s own weight while the legs are held apart. The classic form is a triangular beam with the point facing up, set on a trestle, which the victim had to straddle. Executioners hung weights from the ankles to increase the pressure.

In the modern scene the name has stuck for a piece of play furniture with the same straddling position, usually in a flattened or padded version. What stays the same is the working principle: your own weight on a narrow edge. That is exactly what makes it so intense, and exactly what calls for caution.

Why the wooden horse turns up in the scene

The appeal lies in the combination of position and inevitability. You sit on it, and the furniture does the rest without anyone having to strike a blow, which for some people gives an intense form of surrender and helplessness.
