Window period
The stretch after an infection when a test still shows nothing.
What is the window period?
The window period (in Dutch vensterperiode) is the time between an infection and the moment an STI test can reliably detect it. During that period a test still shows nothing, even though you’re already infected. That’s why just tested is not the same as clean: a test taken soon after a risky contact can miss a recent infection.
| Dutch term | vensterperiode |
| What it is | the time when a test can’t yet see an infection |
| Why | the body needs time for detectable antibodies |
| Result | just tested is not the same as clean |
| Varies by | STI |
How long the window period lasts
That depends on the STI. According to the Flemish Sensoa, a test is reliable from about two weeks for chlamydia and gonorrhea, from six weeks for HIV, and only after three months for hepatitis B and syphilis. For HIV, Soa Aids Nederland adds nuance: a standard combination test can often detect an infection as early as three weeks after the risk, but it can only rule one out three months after the last risky contact. So testing early can show something, but only after the full window period can you truly rule something out.
What the window period is not
“I just got tested, so I’m completely clean.” Not necessarily. A test looks backward, not forward, and a risk from the past few weeks can still fall within the window period. Clean from the test means clean up to that period, not up to this morning.
What I see myself
I take safer sex seriously in my work as a gigolo, and the window period is part of that. A test result is reassuring, but not a free pass: it doesn’t cover what happened afterward or just before. So I don’t lean on testing alone, but on safer sex plus regular testing together. That keeps it sound, even in the weeks a test can’t yet see. Want to know something about this or make an arrangement? I talk about it openly. It’s simply part of the work.
