What is a sjambok?
Sjambok is a heavy, stiff whip of leather or plastic, originally from South Africa. In BDSM it is a tool for impact play: one stiff strand that lands a fierce, concentrated blow. It counts as one of the more intense striking tools, meant for those with experience.

Where the sjambok comes from
The sjambok is not a bedroom accessory by origin. According to the encyclopedic description, it arose in the Cape Colony, was traditionally made from hippo or rhino hide, and was used by farmers to drive oxen and cattle. Later a plastic version came along. In the kink scene the sjambok has been taken up as an impact tool: through its stiff, solid strand it lands a sharp, penetrating blow that feels very different from the broad blow of a flogger.
Why people use a sjambok
The appeal is in the intensity. For anyone who likes heavy, sharp sensation, the sjambok delivers a concentrated blow you do not soon forget. For the giving partner it calls for precision: where you land matters a great deal. What it is not: not a tool for beginners. Through its force a sjambok can cause serious injury, so it belongs with experience, practice, and staying off vulnerable spots like joints, kidneys, and the head. Agree on a safeword beforehand and build up slowly.
