Sex-negative

The learned attitude that sex is mainly dangerous or embarrassing, and how it keeps working as a brake.

What is sex-negative?

Sex-negative is an attitude that approaches sex mainly as risk, sin, or shame. In a sex-negative view, sexuality counts as something dangerous or improper, except within strict limits like marriage. It is the opposite of sex-positive, which sees sex as a healthy and normal part of life.

Where the attitude comes from

Sex-negative is not an insult but a description of a cultural pattern. According to the encyclopedia, a sex-negative view sees sex as problematic, disruptive, and dangerous, and as a destructive force except within marriage. Views like that arrange sexual acts in a hierarchy, with married heterosexuality at the top and the rest below it. They often come from religious or conservative traditions, and many people carry traces of them without calling it that.

Why it matters

A sex-negative message does not disappear once you are an adult. It stays in your body as shame. On this site you can see at the sexual response cycle how shame and the fear of being judged work as a brake on arousal, precisely through the dual control model. Sex-negative conditioning switches that brake on, even when your head has long wanted something else. That is how stubborn shame is. The alternative, a sex-positive attitude, is summed up by a factsheet from Utah State University as positive attitudes about sex, open and non-judgmental, with consent as the floor. That is not a push to want everything, but room to choose without shame what you do and do not want.
