What is an orgy?

Orgy is sex that four or more people take part in at once, with no set roles. It is a free, unstructured form of group sex. The word comes from Greek, where orgia meant secret, ecstatic ritual feasts originally dedicated to the god Dionysus.

What an orgy looks like in practice

What sets an orgy apart is the lack of a script. Where a trio, a gangbang or a spitroast has a recognizable form, an orgy is precisely a loose group in which people do what arises in the moment, with shifting combinations and no set roles. A common picture is a private party where four or more people have sex together without anyone directing it. The number counts in the definition too: where a trio starts at three people, the lower bound of an orgy usually lies at four or more. That free character is exactly what the word has evoked for centuries, and it’s also what sets it apart from the more ordered variants of group sex.

Where the word orgy comes from

The origin explains the mood of the word. According to the Etymologiebank, orgy goes back via French and Latin to the Greek órgia, which meant “secret rite, secret worship”, usually dedicated to Dionysus. Dionysus was the Greek god of wine and fertility, identified by the Romans with Bacchus, and his worship had a pronounced ecstatic, unrestrained character. Dutch took the word over around 1824 in the sense of a debauched feast in honor of Bacchus. So the sexual charge it now has is an offshoot of that ritual, exuberant origin.

Why people choose it

The appeal is surrender and abundance: many stimuli at once, the falling away of the usual brakes, and the excitement of something outside the everyday. For one it’s the freedom of no set role, for another the feeling of being part of something exuberant. Group sex is also less rare than people think: in an American population study by Debby Herbenick and colleagues, 11.5 percent of men and 6.3 percent of women had ever had group sex. That it happens more often than thought doesn’t automatically make it something for everyone. The honest flip side is that an orgy, precisely because it lacks structure, asks a lot of the agreements beforehand. Without clear consent and safer sex it quickly becomes unsafe, and it’s certainly not for everyone. Anyone considering it does so best in a setting where boundaries are taken seriously.

What an orgy is not

“An orgy and swinging are the same.” Not quite. Swinging usually runs in couples and with agreements within its own scene, while an orgy is the free, unstructured extreme.

“Every form of group sex is an orgy.” No. An orgy is one form of group sex; a trio or a gangbang falls under it too but has a clearer form.

“At an orgy there are no rules.” The opposite. Precisely because there’s no script, it leans heavily on consent and on agreements that are clear beforehand.

What I see of it

What I do is the opposite of an orgy: one on one, all the attention on one person. Still, I sometimes hear about it from women who are curious or who have been. What strikes me is that the fantasy about it is often more exciting than the reality, and that whoever looks back on it with pleasure was almost always somewhere boundaries were taken seriously.
