Auralism

Sound does the work: a voice, a moan, or a whisper right by your ear.

What is auralism?

Auralism (Dutch: auralisme) is getting aroused by sound itself, not by an image or a touch. A voice, a moan, a whisper, or dirty talk is the stimulus doing the work here. The word comes from aural, which is about the ear and hearing. In the literature it’s also called auditory fetishism.

Why sound hits so hard

A voice up close feels more intimate than almost any image, maybe because sound reaches your insides without you having to see a thing, and because your ears switch on your imagination instead of laying everything out in front of you. Research by Chivers and Timmers showed that audio stories trigger a measurable physical and felt arousal. Music researcher Jodie Taylor describes auralism as a form of auditory fetishism, where the sound isn’t a background detail. It’s the whole thing. So with auralism the sound stands up front, never off to the side.

Why people love it

Sound comes straight in and needs little. A voice in your ear, or the moaning of someone who’s clearly enjoying it, can turn you on more than anything there is to look at. For one woman it’s the tone of a voice, for another a specific word or the rhythm of someone’s breathing. Think of melting at a spoken message, or the reason phone sex was around long before any picture came with it. Just sound, and still enough. It doesn’t ask much of you: listen, and give yourself over to what you hear.

What auralism is not

Auralism isn’t the same as listening to audio erotica. Audio erotica is the material; auralism is that the sound itself carries the arousal, with or without a story wrapped around it. And it isn’t the same as secretly listening in on someone who doesn’t know it. That skips the consent I always put first.
